The valuable byproducts produced in our various facilities – from blast furnaces to pickling lines – are an established part of the ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe product range. Their use in various areas of everyday life makes an important contribution to conserving resources.
Our range of byproducts includes high-quality materials for cement production, road building, track building and hydraulic engineering. In addition, our blast furnace and steelmaking slags are used to make lime as a fertilizer for agriculture.
In addition to the carbon steel flat products listed here, customers can access a wide range of services and licenses allowing them to benefit from the vast experience of three longstanding steel companies – Thyssen, Krupp and Hoesch.
The Research and Development department brings together specialist knowledge from all areas of science and engineering. The development work covers all stages of steel production. In addition, highly specialized measuring techniques are used to carry out metallurgical characterizations and chemical analyses of materials. Another important element of the research strategy is cooperation with external partners such as universities, research institutes of the Fraunhofer and Max Planck societies and industry.
In the DOC “Dortmunder OberflächenCentrum” service engineering center, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe has one of the world’s leading and most advanced development centers for the coating of flat products. The wide range of modern equipment is also available to customers for coating trials and for coating and surface inspections.

| ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe has developed technologies for improving steel grades and production processes. |
Examples:
We grant licenses for the use of these technologies and associated engineering. |
| Oberflächencentrum – surface engineering center |
| Surface engineering has become established as an important subfield of materials technology. Many of the properties of a material, such as resistance to corrosion, wear and scratches, are determined by its surface. The importance of surface to an end product should not be underestimated: Alongside shape, surface is a major determinant of product design. As a visible and touchable external skin it represents the material’s calling card. |
The DOC surface engineering center develops tailored coatings for application by continuous methods to steel strip. Key areas of work:
The wide range of modern equipment at the DOC® is also available to you. We offer customers coating trials and coating and surface inspections as a service. |
| Research and Development |
| Research and Development department is both a development facility and a service provider. It supports ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG in production and works with the company to continuously strengthen its technological lead. |
