Complex customer requirements call for tailored steel solutions – especially to meet the constantly growing demands of the automobile industry.
ThyssenKrupp has been producing tailored welded blanks since 1985. They are used to meet modern design requirements in vehicle components. Tailored blanks are tailored exactly to individual customer requirements. In “simple” cases this can mean joining two sheets to achieve a wider product than can be produced by rolling. In more complex cases, several individual sheets of different grade, thickness and coating are joined by laser beam welding for use in products that have to meet extremely high safety requirements, for example car doors, floor and side panels, side beams and wheel arches.
Since 2006, ThyssenKrupp Hotform Blanks have been used increasingly in the auto industry for the hot stamping of body parts. Using a tailored blank made up of different steel grades, parts can be produced which display high strength in defined areas and also have the elongation properties required to dissipate impact energy in a controlled way.
ThyssenKrupp Tailored Tubes – laser-welded tubes – permit lightweight spaceframe solutions made of steel which are cost-effective and conserve resources.
The success of our Tailored Products to date impressively shows how processed steel sheet products can increase customer benefit through weight reduction, increased stiffness, reduced parts count, component optimization and cost reduction.
The latest additions to the range –ThyssenKrupp Tailored Strips – open up even more applications for sheet in different grades and thicknesses, both in the automotive industry and in profile production.
ThyssenKrupp Tailored Orbitals® are another highlight. Here the proven tailored blanks principle has been transferred to rotationally symmetrical parts. Tailored Orbitals are used in the engine, transmission, exhaust, chassis, steering and clutch areas.

In laser beam welding, sheets are butt-welded together. Different types of welding lines are available to produce a wide variety of blanks. |
The laser beam weld displays the following properties:
|
Tailored blanks can be produced with linear or non-linear welds. The use of non-linear welds makes it possible to meet varying and in part contradicting demands on vehicle components. Dimensions. |

Increasing demands on passenger protection call for new solutions from the auto industry incorporating lightweight steel construction. The technology of hot stamping for body parts is being used increasingly in auto manufacture for this reason. In this process, a sheet of MBW® 1500 steel is heated in a furnace to approx. 950°C and then cooled in a stamping die at a rate of 30 K/s. As a rule, the part attains strengths of 1,500 MPa. These strength levels cannot be achieved with conventional deep drawing with the steels available today. ThyssenKrupp Tailored Blanks has carried out various investigations into this subject. Initial vehicles featuring this technology went into production in 2007. ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe supplies MBW® 1500 with AlSi coating and uncoated. |

| ThyssenKrupp Tailored Tubes |
ThyssenKrupp Tailored Tubes are hollow profiles which are made of different steel grades and can have different wall thicknesses, strengths and coatings. In the NSB® NewSteelBody, ThyssenKrupp Tailored Tubes were processed into components by means of hydroforming. |

| ThyssenKrupp Tailored Strips |
To make tailored strips, two/three strips of different steel grades and/or thicknesses/coatings are joined together lengthwise by means of laser beam welding. The material is then wound into a coil to be used as a starting product for a customer process. |
